Guess we shouldn't be surprised..politics are pretty much the same everywhere, but that doesn't make it right!
By now, if you live in the Second Ward, you are probably aware that Councilman J.C. Waszkiewicz is not running for a third term. According to an Observer Dispatch article on Tuesday, March 6, 2007, the Republican Committee will be screening candidates on Tuesday, March 13, 2007. However, don't be too quick to run to the phone to call Jerry Green, Republican Party Chair (aka the current Town of New Hartford attorney) to express your wishes to be considered for the Republican endorsed candidate.
Seems like they already may have their candidate (this is a .wmv file and you will need Windows Media Player to view) and it's only March 10th--they aren't even screening candidates until March 13th! It's not because they are supporting the incumbent, because we all know he isn't running. Republicans in New Hartford can rest easy tonight knowing that the next Ward 2 Councilman is already, shall we say "hand-picked". Argh!!! Maybe if you are planning on running for the Fourth Ward councilman, town judge, tax receiver or one of the three county legislator seats you will have better luck.
New Hartford is a Republican town, but perhaps it is time for the Democratic Party to start looking for a few good candidates. For the record, I am a Republican, but at the moment I am not particularly proud of that.
And by the way, don't miss our next installment of "What was missing from the March 1,2007 OD article". We guarantee that you will see the "real" information here first--and you probably will never see it in the Observer Dispatch!
